What a success!

Do you remember the series of films in original version organised by a Facebook Group?

Well, let me tell you it was a real successs!! Such a hit that the tickets were sold out by the time Helena and I arrived at Nueva Condomina. We were quite happy, though.

Next film is next Thursday 3rd March

In the Loop (2009)
Starring Tom Hollander, Peter Capaldi, Gena McKee (Notting Hill) and James Gandolfini (The Sopranos)

The US President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war. But not everyone agrees that war is a good thing. The US General Miller doesn't think so and neither does the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on TV, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington, DC. If Simon can get in with the right DC people, if his entourage of one can sleep with the right intern, and if they can both stop the Prime Minister's chief spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker rigging the vote at the UN, they can halt the war. If they don't... well, they can always sack their Director of Communications Judy, who they never liked anyway and who's back home dealing with voters with blocked drains and a man who's angry about a collapsing wall.

Disney Company Targeting Newborns

This is an article we read some weeks ago. Can you remember the meaning of the highlighted words and expressions?

The Walt Disney Company is venturing into a new and untapped market - newborns. It already has a dominant presence in every other area of childhood, but now wants to start making money from babies. It has released a new product called Disney Baby. Sales agents have been visiting new mothers in maternity hospitals offering a baby suit in exchange for signing up to e-mails from DisneyBaby.com. Disney’s new campaign is attracting criticism. Jeff McIntyre, director of the group Children Now, said: “This is taking advantage of families at an extremely vulnerable time.” New mother Elizabeth Carter said: “It surprised me that Disney was in there promoting something right as the baby was born, but we figured as new parents we weren’t in a position to turn free things down,” she said.

Disney CEO Robert Iger believes his company is offering a fantastic product, saying: “If ever there was an opportunity for a trusted brand to enter a market and provide a better product and experience, it’s this.” He added: “It’s about making something easier and providing [mothers] with a personalized, high-quality product.” Iger estimates the North American newborn baby market alone to be worth $36.3 billion a year. Other world markets will offer significantly more. Disney’s last venture to sell products for babies did not prove to be wholly successful. In 2009, the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood forced Disney to acknowledge that its Baby Einstein products did not turn babies into geniuses. The company ended up offering Baby Einstein refunds.

23 F

Today it is the 30th anniversary of the attempted coup d'état in Spain. I know many of you, my dear students, weren't even born on that date, or you were too young to remember anything. But, in case you do: What do you remember? Where were you? How did you feel? Have your parents told you anything about that day?

Read this BBC report and watch the video - a real slice of history. (I especially recommend the Witness section)

Tibetan language at threat

"Language is the soul of the nation. When language is gone, the nation dies.”
Tibetan blogger, December 2010

Tibetan is not only one of the oldest languages in Asia, it is fundamental to Tibetan identity. Yet Chinese government policies are threatening its very survival. These policies are aimed at systematically wiping out the Tibetan language as part of China’s wider strategy to cement its occupation of Tibet.

How to choose a topic

Also, take into account the following topics included in the Syllabus for Intermediate level:

Some websites you can visit for ideas are:

How to organise your speech effectively

When you speak, does your audience get it? You need to organize your ideas to promote understanding.

  Introduce yourself and the topic:

Hello, my name is …..
Today I would like to talk about…
I’m going to explain the difference between…

Once the topic is introduced, refer to the main points of your presentation:

First, I’ll talk about….
Secondly,…
Then, I will continue with…
And, finally/ to finish,…

      Provide a conclusion:

In conclusion,
To sum up,
To conclude,

Use gap fillers to give you some time to think (don’t say “eeeeee”).

Well, …
I mean, …
Um,…
Anyway,…

Ø  You may also show/give out an outline with the main points, so that your audience can follow you easily.

Ø  Learn, do not memorize. Never memorize your speech word for word: you may forget a word or two and, consequently, you won’t know what to say next. In addition, you will deliver your oral presentation in a mechanical manner.

Taken from my colleague Helena. For a list of useful connectors please visit her post on How to organise your speech effectively.
