How to organise your speech effectively

When you speak, does your audience get it? You need to organize your ideas to promote understanding.

  Introduce yourself and the topic:

Hello, my name is …..
Today I would like to talk about…
I’m going to explain the difference between…

Once the topic is introduced, refer to the main points of your presentation:

First, I’ll talk about….
Secondly,…
Then, I will continue with…
And, finally/ to finish,…

      Provide a conclusion:

In conclusion,
To sum up,
To conclude,

Use gap fillers to give you some time to think (don’t say “eeeeee”).

Well, …
I mean, …
Um,…
Anyway,…

Ø  You may also show/give out an outline with the main points, so that your audience can follow you easily.

Ø  Learn, do not memorize. Never memorize your speech word for word: you may forget a word or two and, consequently, you won’t know what to say next. In addition, you will deliver your oral presentation in a mechanical manner.
